How to Choose a Nervous System Reset Course

There is a lot of vagus nerve content and very little of it changes anything. Here is what a nervous system reset actually requires, and what to look for before you pay for one.

Search vagus nerve reset and you will find thousands of thirty-second clips. Most of them are describing something real and promising something impossible. The exercises work on your state. They do not, on their own, work on your baseline.

State versus baseline

State is where you are right now. A long exhale, a cold face, a walk — these shift state, sometimes dramatically, and that is genuinely useful. Baseline is how quickly you activate, how intensely, and how long it takes you to come down. Baseline is what makes an ordinary week hard, and baseline only moves with repetition.

Nothing resets. Things retrain, slowly, on evidence.

What to look for in a programme

  • An explanation of the mechanism you can repeat to someone else. If you cannot, you will abandon the practice.
  • Short daily work — five to ten minutes — over long weekly sessions.
  • Something to do mid-activation, not only prevention.
  • Sleep addressed directly. Regulation without sleep does not hold.
  • Honest timelines. Anyone promising a fixed system in a weekend is selling relief, not change.

What to be sceptical of

  1. Claims of permanence after a single protocol.
  2. Exercises with no explanation attached.
  3. Programmes that never mention sleep, load or recovery.
  4. Anything that treats calm as the target. The goal is range — the ability to activate and settle — not permanent stillness.

If you want to start before you buy anything

Lengthen your exhale beyond your inhale for two minutes, three times a day, for a fortnight. Keep your wake time fixed. Note what your activation actually feels like in the first thirty seconds. That is the beginning of the work and it costs nothing.

Nervous System Reset is the structured version of this, and Nervous System Foundations is the ground floor if you are new to it. Switch Off is for the particular problem of a system that will not power down at the end of the day.

Frequently asked

Does a nervous system reset actually work?
Regulation is real and trainable, but the word reset is misleading. You are not clearing a system; you are repeatedly giving it evidence of safety until its default shifts. That takes weeks of small practice, not one session.
How long does nervous system regulation take?
Individual exercises change your state within minutes. Changing your baseline — how quickly you activate and how fast you settle — usually takes six to twelve weeks of near-daily practice.
What should a nervous system course include?
The mechanism in plain terms, short daily practices rather than long ones, work on sleep and recovery, guidance on what to do mid-activation, and honest expectations about pace.
Are vagus nerve exercises legitimate?
The physiology is real — breathing pattern, exhale length, cold exposure and certain eye and neck movements do influence autonomic state. The exaggeration is in the claims about speed and permanence, not in the exercises themselves.
