Hypervigilance Is Not Personality

You built a life on the assumption that the readiness was you. It is not. And the work of putting it down is not a personality change. It is a returning.

You have been on for so long you forgot what off would even feel like. You called it being organised, being responsible, being the one who could be counted on. Underneath the labels was a body that had never received permission to stop scanning.

Why the vigilance made sense

Somewhere earlier, reading the room accurately was how you stayed safe. The system learned. The system did its job. The system did not receive the update that the room has changed.

What putting it down actually asks of you

  • Accepting that other people can handle their own emotional weather without you managing it.
  • Feeling the withdrawal — because vigilance was also a form of control.
  • Not filling the space you free up with a new form of doing.
  • Letting the body finish sentences it has been holding for years.
You are not a naturally alert person. You are a person whose alertness has never been allowed to end.

Frequently asked

Is hypervigilance the same as being organised or responsible?
No. Responsibility is a choice. Hypervigilance is a state your body cannot switch off. They can look similar from the outside. Only one of them lets you rest.
