You were told the answer to your loneliness was to open more. So you opened. And the loneliness got worse. Because you opened to people who had not earned it, and the openness cost you something without giving you what it promised.
The difference between vulnerability and exposure
Vulnerability is contact. Exposure is being seen without consent, by people who did not deserve the seeing. One builds intimacy. The other quietly erodes your trust in your own judgement.
Discernment is not defence
It is the practice of noticing who has met your small disclosures well before offering them your large ones. The people who can hold you are not the people who are simply present. They are the people who have shown, in small ways, that they can hold.
Vulnerability is not the absence of protection. It is protection offered to the right person at the right time.
Frequently asked
- Is oversharing the same as being vulnerable?
- No. Oversharing is a bid — for reassurance, closeness, or offloading. Vulnerability is a considered disclosure offered to a person who has demonstrated they can hold it.
