Macrodosing is one of those words that spread faster than its definition. It is not a clinical term, and there is no agreed threshold. It broadly means a dose you can clearly feel, as opposed to microdosing, which is defined by not feeling it.
How the terms are used
- Microdose: sub-perceptual, taken on a repeating schedule, intended to be invisible during ordinary activity.
- Macrodose: fully perceptual, taken occasionally, with time set aside and usually with intent.
- Heroic dose: a specific and much larger case, associated with complete dissolution of the ordinary sense of self.
The three are not points on a single scale of intensity so much as different practices with different purposes and different risks.
Why the number matters less than people think
The variable that most reliably shapes an experience is not milligrams. It is context: physical setting, emotional state going in, who is present, what is unresolved, and whether there is anything in place for the days afterwards. Research on psychedelic-assisted therapy is unusually consistent on this point — preparation and integration carry the outcome.
People remember the experience. What changes them is what they did with the following month.
Where this goes wrong
- No preparation. Walking into a strong altered state with unexamined material and no plan.
- No support. Alone, unsupervised, with no one who knows where you are.
- No integration. A significant experience that gets filed as a memory rather than metabolised into changes.
- Ignoring contraindications. Personal or family history of psychosis, certain medications and unstable circumstances all matter.
This is not legal or medical advice, and legality varies by jurisdiction. If you are researching the subject, the two things worth your attention are preparation and integration. Before the Journey covers the first, Integration After Psilocybin covers the second, and Nervous System Foundations is useful groundwork for either.
Frequently asked
- What does macrodosing mean?
- It is an informal term for taking a full, clearly perceptual dose of a psychedelic, in contrast to microdosing, which is sub-perceptual by definition. There is no standardised threshold — usage varies between communities.
- What is the difference between microdosing and macrodosing?
- Microdosing aims for a dose you cannot consciously feel, taken on a schedule. Macrodosing means a dose that produces a clear altered state, taken occasionally and usually with dedicated time set aside.
- Is macrodosing the same as a heroic dose?
- No. A heroic dose refers to a particularly large dose associated with complete ego dissolution. Macrodosing is a broader term covering any fully perceptual dose.
- What matters most for outcome?
- Preparation, setting, mental health history, and integration afterwards. In research settings these variables — not dose alone — are consistently associated with how an experience is experienced and what remains of it.
