Shame Is Not the Truth About You

You mistook the voice of shame for the voice of conscience. They are not the same. Here is how to tell them apart.

You have carried a low, steady sense of being fundamentally wrong for so long you assumed it was insight. It is not. It is a very old strategy your body learned when being wrong was safer than being disappointing.

Where shame actually comes from

Not from your worst act. From the earliest moment you learned that some part of you was not welcome. You collapsed that part into a story about who you were, and the story kept you safe. It is not keeping you safe anymore. It is keeping you small.

What shame is not

  • It is not conscience. Conscience is specific and workable.
  • It is not humility. Humility does not require self-hatred to function.
  • It is not accuracy. It is old information wearing the costume of truth.
  • It is not a sign you are unlovable. It is a sign you were once loved conditionally.
Shame will always feel true. That is what makes it dangerous. Truth does not need to convince you.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between shame and guilt?
Guilt says: I did a thing that does not align with who I want to be. Shame says: I am the thing. Guilt is workable. Shame collapses the self into the mistake and leaves no room to move.
